"Give your list to the grocer ..." - not in Britain, mate. In the late 40's/50's I accompanied my mother to the grocers (10 mins walk). She would call out an item, watch him weigh it out, announce the price and chalk it on the blackboard, wrap it in newspaper, and hand it over into our big fabric bags. All this in raucous banter with us and the neighbours in line behind us, and local gossip.

We carried it all home - so small quantities and frequent trips!

Thanks for a tremendous article. Fascinating informative. What a loss this City has suffered. As a kid I worked in one of those small community stores, a gentler, friendlier time.
